If you read a lot of property descriptions you’ve seen “Artist’s Retreat” and know that it usually means someplace we hope is inspirational but more often than not it is just quirky. Well prepare to be amazed. When they say this Beachwood Canyon compound has an artist’s studio on the grounds they mean real live artists.  The estate of actress Carmen Scarpitta, daughter of the Italian born sculptor Salvatore Scarpitta (1887-1948), is selling this unique and historic property in Beachwood Canyon.picture-15

Scarpitta’s lauded Father’s well known works include a bust of Benito Mussolini and three panels at the entrance of the Stock Exchange.  Carmen’s brother was a celebrated American artist who had several one man shows and participated in group shows with, among others, Norman Bluhm, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauchenberg & James Rosenquist.  His work is part of the permanent collections at numerous museums including the MOMA, the Whitney, and LACMA.

The property sits on a large 22,000 squarefoot lot. It is oriented to allow for a long green front lawn with ponds, paths and palms. There is a wooden structure with living quarters facing the pond which has an almost log cabin feel. This part of the property is connected at the back to a Mediterranean building. The rear structure has a kitchen, baths, bedroom and the two story artist’s studio. Additionally, there is a two story detached garage with living space on the upper level. The entire compound is peppered with precious details: dutch doors, glazed tiles, stone reliefs, fountains and stained glass to name a few.

The property is located across from the Beachwood Diner and the Beachwood Market.  And if any compound is only as good as it’s gate this one is a stand out.  The eastern side of the historic Beachwood Gate is connected to the front wall and is said to be part of the original deed. This priceless piece of history is available for under $2mil.picture-28
