Farmers Market Fun
We always feel so lucky to live in Southern California – sunshine and fresh produce all year long – but summer… ah summer, when a plethora of farm fresh goodies are in season including one of our favorites: cherries!
At the height of the cherry season you can find perfect Bings and Rainiers at Ralphs & Pink Berry, but if you have the time, getting them at your local farmers market feels like a special treat. We are lucky to have a network of farmers markets throughout the city. Using the Certified Farmers Market website http://www.farmernet.com/events/cfms is a quick way to find one close to your house. An added bonus: the markets registered with the CFM are guaranteed to be farmers selling directly to the public.
Cherries are one of our favorites but there are so many wonderful farmers market treasures. The sweet smell of strawberries draws you to the stalls where at the height of the season the mounds of bright red berries make taking home a three pack irresistible. And when the baby artichokes make their way down the 5 to your table even an amateur cook can feel like a culinary mastermind. The Southland Farmers Association has a great list of what’s in season http://www.sfma.net/consumer/inseason.shtml so you don’t have to miss any of your favorites.
Most of the farmers markets are on Sunday, but there are a few on alternate days. Silverlake has a Saturday market, the Plummer Park market is on Monday morning, you can visit a Venice market on Friday morning and the Culver City markets is Tuesday afternoon till 7:00 so you can get some shopping in at the end of the day.
Whichever market you pick – enjoy!

Summer's almost over ...
If you haven’t been to the new public pool in Santa Monica it’s worth the trip.
The Annenberg Community Beach House opened in April. It’s the renovation of the pool of the old 1920s Marion Davies Estate on the PCH in Santa Monica. They have done a beautiful job bringing the old pool up to its glorious splendor while making it user friendly for this century’s swimmers. The beautiful deco tiles remain intact.
Next door the guest house has been restored and docents are welcoming and full of knowledge about the property….
Originally the 5 acre estate was built in the late 1920′s by William Randolph Hearst for his long time mistress Marion Davies. The couple entertained Hollywood legends Cary Grant, Clark Gable, Charlie Chaplin, Joan Crawford, and Gloria Swanson, to name a few, there for the next decade. The property then became a failed hotel and was torn down in 1959. The land was operated as a private beach club until the Northridge Earthquake in 1994 which severely damaged the property. The Annenberg Foundation funded the much needed restoration of the pool house and guest house.
After taking a swim and a tour make sure to visit our friend Fred at his restaurant Back on the Beach where you can eat a burger or a Marion Davies salad with your feet in the sand looking at the beach…. Beware of the pigeons and seagulls.

Pizza & A Stella For $10?!?
Just down the street from our Hillside listing at Sunset & Gardner (near Fairfax) is a fun little restaurant most of you know called Cheebo.
Always a fun go to but on a recent afternoon between appointments we took advantage of the ‘Afternoon Delight’ recessionista special they’ve been running this summer: 3-6pm choice of any pizza, salad-fries-soup-or-escarole and a glass of wine or beer all for just ten bucks.
We had the Cheebo Fresca Pizza (fresh mozzarella, tomato, arugula & prosciutto – yum) and a Stella – it was good and cheap – so summer 2009.
Yay for Cheebo!
Hillside is in escrow so you missed out on that one but if you want a place that is Cheebo adjacent give us a call.
